Resident of the Month: Bonnie P.

Bonnie was born January 16, 1932 in Arcadia, Nebraska to Lenze and Nattie. She has two brothers, Henry and Thermon and four sisters, Olive Arlene, Edna and Georgia.

She met her husband, Peter, through reading Reader’s Digest. She found him in there as a pen pal. She wrote to him and the rest is history! They were married 36 years before he passed away. They had no children.

Before retirement, she worked for a hotel in Des Moines for 46 years, then with Meredith Corporation for 10 years.

One memory Bonnie recalls from growing up is experiencing the Great Depression first hand. She lost two sisters from the depression. They lived in Nebraska at the time and they all took care of each other. She had to drop out of high school because they didn’t have any money. She did end up getting artist diploma.

Bonnie never learned to drive. She tried driving the tractor once, but her dad didn’t like how she drove it. She would take a bus or cab to get from place to place.

Her favorite food is ice cream. Her favorite holiday meal is turkey. They would have it at Christmas with sweet potatoes and the family was always together.

When Bonnie was younger, she worked a lot. She would rake lawns and go fishing in the Middle Loop River so they could have fish for dinner. She loves watching rodeos and Nebraska football. She said Nebraska football isn’t doing as well as they used to!

She likes Norwalk Nursing & Rehabilitation because of the people, especially therapy, and Wayne for fixing her things.

Her advice for the younger generation is to not be lazy. Work for a living and not off state funds. Everyone should work for a living and for God.

If Bonnie could go back to any age she would go back to age 10 or 12 to see her favorite friend and to walk. She would play and talk with her.

Bonnie says the closest thing they had as a family tradition was believing in God.

What Bonnie has liked best about her life so far is that she trusts God with everything. Also, marrying Pete was her proudest moment. He left too soon (11 years ago).

Bonnie really loves football and wishes Nebraska played better! She loves Bohemian and polka music. She has had a very good life, even with the tough times. She has a cat named Smokey at home.
